Santo Tomás se encuentra rodeado por varias presas del viejo sistema hidroeléctrico Miguel Alemán. El pueblo lo mudaron a seis kilómetros al noreste de lo que anteriormente era el antiguo asentamiento, con la finalidad de construir la Presa Santa Bárbara.
El 14 de octubre de 1956, el pueblo de Santo Tomás de los Plátanos fue reubicado seis kilómetros al noreste porque el antiguo asentamiento quedaría inundado ya que se construiría la Presa Santa Bárbara.
Aún así, después de 60 años, algunas construcciones prevalecen bajo el agua porque, según pobladores del viejo SantoTomás, la iglesia y algunas casas del pueblo fuerons construidas con cal, piedra, arena de la más fina y sangre de animal, lo que hizo una mezcla bastante resistente para cualquier destrucción.
Si visitas esta presa, podrás maravillarte con la torre de la antigua parroquia que sobresale del agua para darte la más cordial bienvenida a Pueblo Viejo, como se le conoce hoy en día a este sitio.
