Este asentamiento de la planicie costera de Veracruz data del período Epiclásico, cuando los asentamiento Totonacas del periodo anterior perdieron fuerza como efecto del debilitamiento de Teotihuacán. De acuerdo con el INAH, a consecuencia de esto, los habitantes de los antiguos asentamientos se reúnen en pueblos pequeños con extensiones moderadas de territorio.
Quiahuiztlán sufrió dos invasiones en el Posclásico, primero la de los Toltecas y posteriormente de los Mexicas, de quienes permanecen sujetos hasta el momento del contacto español. Actualmente es uno de los asentamientos más importantes de estas civilizaciones que siguen en pie.
El nombre de este lugar proviene del náhuatl y significa “lugar de lluvia”, un espacio que es conocido por su amplio desarrollo desde tiempos precerámicos, cuando existieron varios grupos humanos en Nueva Roca Escondida y otros lugares de la franja costera central del Golfo de México.
